Nowadays it’s easier than ever before to travel. This is surely in no small part due to the rapid advancement of online technologies and the rise of travel-obsessed social networks and popular online travel and tourism services like booking sites (hello and expedia) and Airbnb.

And while many of these technologies and services have dramatically shifted the way we travel and engage with the global travel and tourism industries; certain fundamental principles remain.

Daddy Long Legs Self-Catering Apartment

One such maxim, and one we here at Daddy Long Legs Art Hotel & Self-Catering Apartments consider crucial, is that comfort and convenience are key.

In fact, this is one of the main reasons we opened our days way back when; to provide independent travellers with comfortable and convenient Cape Town city accommodation.

Which is where our self-catering apartments come in. Offering a real home-away-from-home-while-traveling feeling, our 5 self-catering apartments are fully equipped and comprise both 1- and 2-bedroom option, catering for between 2 and 4 travellers.

It’s no secret that visitors to Cape Town are blessed with stunning views virtually everywhere they go. From the imposing peaks of the Table Mountain National Park to the glittering waters of the city’s world-class beaches, the Mother City’s vistas are as beautiful as they are varied.

And when it comes to taking in the city’s sights, particularly its most famous attraction Table Mountain, where better to enjoy and appreciate the view than on a sunny day on a rooftop bar, refreshing drink in hand.
And while the city boasts more than a few beautiful rooftop watering holes to choose, the following 3 are some of our faves to gaze at the city’s beloved mountain icon.

And best of all they’re all within a relatively short distance from Daddy Long Legs Art Hotel & Self-Catering Apartments, meaning it’s super convenient to experience all 3 of these when staying at either our hotel or self-catering apartments, ideally located in the city centre along Long Street.

Situated along a trendy corner of Kloof Nek road, this rooftop bar which sits above the boutique Cloud 9 Hotel doesn’t just present its guests with arguably the best up-close-and-personal view of Table Mountain, it also features a turquoise splash pool that is just so instagrammable.

The Sky Bar above Piano Bar in the charming De Waterkant quarter is another bar with a pool and view. Come here for relaxing sunset vibes, gorgeous mountain views and, when the weather demands, a welcome splash in the pool.

Eclectic décor and a cool hipster vibe characterise Dark Horse, an eatery and watering hole located on upper Kloof Road at the base of Table Mountain. Come here during the day for cold beers, and epic views. And at night, the socialising and people-watching are on point.

Other points of interest that are pretty close (if not within walking distance then only a few short minute's drive) include the rainbow-coloured and instaworthy Bo Kaap dsitrict and of course, the city's most famous attraction the Table Mountain National Park (pictured here).

As we steadfastly march on towards summer in the southern hemisphere (is it just us or are you also finding it crazy how quickly this year’s flying by?!) it’s time to start packing away the winter wardrobe and whip out those shorts and swimming costumes. The outdoorsy lifestyle for which Cape Town is so well known is calling.

Thanks to its rich history and fascinating cultural heritage, coupled with the breath-taking natural landscapes that surround here, Cape Town indeed offers its residents and visitors an abundance of travel adventures and tourist gems, both of the outdoors type as well as of the urban variety. This is surely why the Mother City frequently gets rated as one of the world’s best destinations for tourists and travelers.

And while it’s hardly surprisingly that many of the activities that await those traveling to the Cape incur a certain level of expense (national park entrance fees for example), there are still a number of travel adventures you can enjoy without having to fork out any money.

Here we take a look at 3 of our favourite (free) things to do when the sun graces Cape Town with its glorious presence:

Table Mountain hiking Cape TownHike a mountain

Flanked by staggering mountain peaks on the one side and glittering Atlantic ocean beaches on the other, Cape Town provides outdoor enthusiasts with some seriously epic excursions (and views).

If you’re the hiking type, one absolute MUST-DO in your time in Cape Town is hike up a mountain. And we’ve got a few for you to choose from!

Popular Lions Head is a moderately difficult hike that is always a winner and one we’d definitely recommend. Depending on your individual fitness level it could take as little as 45-60 min to summit the peak from the start of the trail.

Table Mountain itself is another mountain-climbing and travel gem. Named as one of the world’s 7 wonders of nature, summiting the flat-topped berg is one of the best ways to take in the magical scenery of the Cape. Several hiking trails are available, starting at various points from around the greater Cape Town area.

Do your research, be prepared, don’t hike alone and have fun!

Go beaching Cape Town beach and mountain

Alongside mountain missions, beachy things are likely one of the best (free) things you can enjoy while in Cape Town during the sunnier times of the year. The Clifton and Camps Bay beaches are always beautiful and worth the visit - if only to capture that instaworthy holiday shot!

There are however many other equally stunning beaches along the rugged shoreline of the Cape peninsula. Llandudno and Beta Beach are spectacular secluded spots that are favourites with locals and generally less crowded than other beaches.

If you plan a day on the beach, prepare for the harsh African sun; and if you plan a swim in the ocean, prepare for the frigid waters of the Atlantic.

Colourful houses and car in Bo Kaap Cape TownTake a free walking tour

Although it’s often the surrounding nature that gets all the attention, the city itself boasts enough points of interest and attractions to make it more than worthwhile to explore its streets.

From the vibrant and kaleidoscopic homes of Bo-Kaap to the historic city centre you will be amazed by all the interesting things you’ll discover while weaving your way through the buildings and alleys of the Mother City.

And best of all you can enjoy a free guided walking tour of the city, exploring major highlights, like the Parliament buildings, Church Square, Greenmarket Square and the City Hall where Nelson Mandela famously gave his first speech after being released from prison.
